Percy Park 36 - 26 Tynedale Raiders
Park's 1st XV and Lions squad took on Tynedale Raiders last evening in a training game to warm up for the season proper which begins on 4th September 2010. Park scored three tries in the opening session two from Martin Potts at number eight. Martin aged 25 has returned to the club after several years away from rugby, but the former North of England Colt looked very promising at the back of the scrum.
Both teams used all of their large squads, with Park having nearly 40 players available, which did not include the 25 Academy players who were training on the 1st XV pitch.
Park's forwards were more dominant in the set peice for three out of the four sessions, and although Tynedale had some obvious talent on display in their back division, they couldn't capitalise against a resolute Percy Park defence.
Further Park tries came from Ash Smith, Colin Murphy, Paul Hardcastle, and coach James Ponton scored the final try of the game getting on the end of a move started by newly appointed skipper John Scott.
The pre-season continues with a training game against Wallsend this Saturday 21st August 2010, kick off 2pm. Coach Ponton is keen to have as much pre-season training game action as possible in preparation for what will be a tough season for both 1st XV and Lions. Next Wednesday their will be a joint training session with Blaydon, and 1st XV and Lions will be in action with training games at home to Ponteland.
