In a hard fought Northumberland Senior Cup match with Berwick initially taking the lead, Park hit back to win 29 -13.
It was a typical sleepy start for Park after only 2 minutes, which allowed the Berwick number 8 to pick up from a wheeled scrumage on the Park 5 metre line and throw an outrageous dummy to cross the line for the visitor's first points of the evening. Park did however respond quickly when Marcus Turner powered his way over the line after scrum half Jimmy Baldwin had tied up some loose line out ball.
Neither kicker was able to convert, although Nathan Trotter for Berwick did kick a penalty for visitors to take the lead. This was soon cancelled out by a well executed drop goal by David Griffiths for Park, before Brett Sylph slotted a penalty for the home side to lead 14 - 8 going into the break.
Park started the second half better than they had in the first, and soon extended their lead with another penalty before Liam Casey scored Park's second try of the night, being put into open space by centre Mark Walton.
Berwick had repeatedly offended for much of the first half and were lucky not to have received any yellow cards. Referee Tony Parlett's patience did wear thin however when the Berwick skipper came in from the side of a ruck preventing Park with quick possession. Park's number 8 Brett Sylph capitalised on the disparity in numbers and scored after picking up from the back of a 5 metre scrum.
With 10 minutes to go the home side supporters were looking for the team to drive home their advantage and put on a large score, but Berwick's Northumberland Under 20, Nathan Trotter had other ideas, as the visitors ran the ball from their own 22 and Trotter raced 75 metres to the Park line to score.
As the freezing fog descended on Preston Avenue an eerie silence spread over the ground and the game petered out with Park winning 29 - 13 and booked their place in the semi final against Morpeth who had dispatched Ponteland on Saturday. The game will take place at Mitford Road, Morpeth next Wednesday 4th April 2007. Kick off 6.00 pm.
On Saturday Percy Park Ist XV return to league action and play fellow strugglers Horden at home. Park Pumas take on Tynedale Grasshoppers in the final of the Third XV cup, which is being hosted by Ashington RFC. Kick off is at 2.00 pm.
