NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2010
Welcome to the Autumn 2010 edition of the Percy Park Newsletter, and a brand new season full of anticipation from Under 7 to 1st XV. If there is anything you want to bring to the attention of other club members, or any forthcoming events you want to advertise, this is the ideal forum. Please continue to send any information for inclusion in next quarter's newsletter to mick@percyparkrfc.co.uk
SUPPORT YOUR TEAM SUPPORT YOUR SPONSORS
In the summer newsletter we brought you the story that a new perimeter fence was on order for the 1st XV pitch. The fence is now in situ, and we would like to thank all the sponsors who have agreed to advertise around the pitch. At the time of writing this article the advertising boards are being produced and will soon be in place, hopefully before the first home league game which is against Morpeth on Saturday 11th September 2010.
There is still some space available, and the offer is still open, so if you wish to advertise your company, you can purchase a new board and 3 years advertising for the special price of £500, a package which will save £250.

“TALL OAKS FROM LITTLE ACORNS GROW”
This is the motto of the Percy Park Youth Trust which is this season starting its 25th year. The trust was the brainchild of past presidents and life members Tony Baker and Jack Pyle who sadly are no longer with us. Tony, Jack and several senior club members had the foresight to establish the trust in 1986 to build up funds for the furtherance of junior rugby, when the club was cash strapped.
After several years of wrangling with the Charities Commission, and in no small part, the efforts of Emma Duff at Hadaway & Hadaway, the Trust was awarded charitable status, which has greatly improved the fund raising efforts in support of mini and junior rugby. The trust currently stands at over £30,000, but has over the last 25 years distributed more than this sum towards provision of equipment, coaching and first aid courses, and giving financial assistance to families to help their children attend courses when their financial circumstance would not permit.
The trust has also received additional funds from other registered charities and latterly the Percy Park minis and the Under 14’s have benefited from grants of £750 each, from Barclays Bank who have matched their own fund raising efforts via the Trust.
Donations to the trust are always welcome, and as the Percy Park Youth Trust is a registered charity, donation can be increased with gift aid. For more details contact Mick Ishida on 07769705558 or email mick@percyparkrfc.co.uk

As last year 10% of the net proceeds will go to charity, and this year it has been decided to support the Saras Hope Foundation. Inspired by the courage and tremendous positive spirit of Sara Hoburn, Saras Hope Foundation was formed at the end of June 2007. Family and friends plan to raise the funds to buy a plot of land and build a holiday retreat on the beautiful island of Crete for young cancer patients in the UK and their families.
HELP FOR HEROES - C2C
Several Percy Park members some reaching a milestone age in their lives recently cycled the Coast to Coast route in aid of this most worthy charity. The group was made up of Gav Yates, Chris Rowley, Jim Hilton, Ade Bartle, Mel Clyde, Craig Bartle, John Guthrie, Liam Casey, Nick Shepherd, Rouven Snowdon, and Don Millican. The lads completed the route a couple of weeks ago and are still collecting donations.
So far they have raised almost £1400 towards their target of £2000.
Donating can be made through the web site JustGiving by logging in to www.justgiving.com/Geordie-Hillbillies. It is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - and raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
The Help for Heroes charity does not question the rights and wrongs of recent wars, but strives towards providing the best possible care and support for those wounded in the service of our country.
Please give as much as you can for this great cause, every little helps.
Photo's of the event can be seen on the JustGiving page.
MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS
As its the start of the new season this also means that membership subscriptions are now due. Everyone will soon be receiving their subscription pack. Its important that the club has the correct contact details so with that in mind could everyone ensure that their details are up to date and if they ever change inform Mick Ishida at mick@percyparkrfc.co.uk.
A NEW SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
The opening 1st XV league game of the new season is away to Hartlepool Rovers on 4th September 2010, and sees the new points system introduced for levels below the National Leagues.
All clubs were canvassed for their opinions regarding bonus points, and the overwhelming response was that clubs are in favour of the points system adopted by the Premiership, Championship and National Leagues. This season there will be 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, and there will also be a bonus points awarded if a team scores four tries or more in a match or a losing bonus point if the margin of defeat is seven points or fewer.
Training games against Sedgely Park, Tynedale, Wallsend and Ponteland have given the coaching staff plenty to think about, but now for the real thing........
LIONS JOIN CaNDY LEAGUE
This season Percy Park Lions will be joining the Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire league (CaNDY for short). It was decided after last season when several clubs announced their intention to leave the Northumberland 2a league to join the CaNDY league, that a new division 2 would be added to the league to accommodate all the clubs, and to ensure there were fewer miss matches. Park will be joining Alnwick II, Blaydon III, Durham City II, Gateshead II, Gosforth II, Hartlepool Rovers II, Morpeth Edwardians, Sunderland II and Tynedale Hoppers.
BALDWIN GETS ENGLAND LIONHEARTS CALL UP
Park scrum half Jimmy Baldwin celebrated a call up to England's Amateur Rugby League National team for their game against Ireland Wolfhounds in Limmerick on 14th August 2010. You may not know that in the summer months Jimmy plays rugby league for Wallsend Eagles, and strong performances at hooker caught the eye of England head coach Marc Simon.
The team won 44 - 12, but the win wasn't enough to secure the 4 Nations Cup which was won by Scotland Bravehearts who had beaten England in a close encounter at the start of the campaign.
STAND REFURBISHED
As part of our ongoing programme of ground and club house improvements, work has been carried out on the stand during the close season. The rust which seemed to be holding the structure in place was only superficial and was removed and the stand primed and painted in the finest “battleship grey.” Many thanks to Phil Ellis for all his hard work.
A new sign is in manufacture, courtesy of the junior section, and we are also hopeful of installing a new scoreboard.
We are also installing a new sign at the main car park entrance to advertise the “Next Home 1st XV fixture”, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Hadaway & Hadaway.

SATURDAY 11th SEPTEMBER 2010
As in the last couple of seasons, we are having a pre-match lunch before the first home league game of the season. Tables of 10, 12 or more if required, are available at the same cost of £10.00 per head. Those who have attended the lunches will agree that Margaret and Brian's catering is superb and real value for money.
The game kicks off at 3pm with lunch being served at 1.30pm prompt.
We are expecting this lunch to be well attended, so if you wish to book a table could you contact Mick Ishida as soon as possible to reserve your place. Numbers will be restricted to 120.
Last season, we also had a Christmas Lunch before the 1st XV league game prior to the festive period. Due to the success of this event, this is advanced notice that we will be having Christmas Lunch on Saturday 18th December 2010. Once again we are restricted to 120 places due to space constraints and tables will be reserved on a first come first served basis.
LATEST FROM KENYA
In the last edition of “Park Life” we brought you news of club member Sophie Dale’s visit to Kenya and work with the Pala High School in Ndhiwa. The staff and pupils of the school couldn’t thank Sophie enough for the gifts of rugby shirts, balls and equipment. Whilst our facilities here at Park are first class, at Pala High school they play in bare feet and on rock hard ground, their rugby skills may be a bit raw, but their enthusiasm knows no bounds.
Sophie is planning to go back to Kenya in association with Whitley High School in the coming months.
