Winning end to the season

PERCY PARK 47 – 32 PENRITH

Percy Park ended their season as it had begun, with a win over Penrith and finished 4th in National 3 North, their highest placing since the leagues began. Prior to the match almost 100 club members and guests attended a lunch which was also attended by no fewer than four Past Presidents of the Rugby Football Union; Danie Sefontein was RFU President in 1992-3, Derek Morgan 2002-3, John Owen 2009-10 and Richard Appleby 2010-11.

The match itself kicked off in fine conditions, and it was Percy Park who made the front running until somewhat against the run of play Penrith scored a well worked try under the posts. A missed tackle down the right hand wing allowed the visitors to get in behind the Park defence and a couple of well timed passes saw right wing Ben Littleton go over, with his try converted by fly half Stephen Wood.

Ten minutes later Park scored their first of seven tries on the day with Ali Blair going over after a break by Ash Smith who offloaded in the tackle to allow the Park left wing to cross the line. The conversion which would have drawn Park level hit the post and stayed out.

The game itself was a fast flowing affair and with Park running the ball out of defence a wide pass was intercepted on the 22 by Steven Wood to go under the posts and he also kicked the conversion to give his side the lead 14 – 5.

No Harrogate double for Park

PERCY PARK 10 – 43 HARROGATE

High flying Harrogate travelled to Preston Avenue looking to avenge their defeat at Claro Road earlier in the season at the hands of Percy Park. After the success of winning the Northumberland Senior Cup on Wednesday evening it was back to league action and Park had to make a few changes due to injury and unavailability. Influential player coaches Michael Stephenson and James Ponton were out, and Craig Fidler was back abroad with work. Ollie Gilmore came in for Jimmy Baldwin at scrum half and Brett Sylph started at number 8 with Ben Bell moving to the bench.

Pumas win 3rd XV Northumberland Cup

NORTHUMBERLAND NO3 CUP

PERCY PARK PUMAS 12 – 5 MORPETH EDWARDIANS

Percy Park Pumas - Northumberland No3 Cup County ChampionsPercy Park Pumas - Northumberland No3 Cup County Champions

The Pumas and the Edwardians travelled to Greenfields Alnwick to play the final of the 3rd XV Cup, and although blustery, conditions were dry and fine for what turned out to be a very competitive and close encounter. Park kicked off with the wind advantage in the first half, and had the better of the early exchanges, although once Morpeth found their rhythm, they began to get the upper hand in the scrummage.

Park conceded a number of penalties and Morpeth had an early chance to go ahead but the kick at goal was well wide of the mark.

The Pumas set up an attack inside their own half and back row Adam Fidler broke loose down the left hand flank. Seeing the defensive line up flat he opted for a delicate side foot chip through the gap for wing Ryan Brooke to run on to. Ryan did well to pick up and hold on to the loose ball and finished well for a try in the corner, shrugging off would be tackles in the process. Stephen Baskerville went close with the conversion which just went wide, but Park led 5 – 0 after 25 minutes.

County Champions 2013

County Champions 2013County Champions 2013NORTHUMBERLAND SENIOR CUP FINAL

PERCY PARK 25 – 11 MORPETH

Percy Park were looking to make it 3 senior cup wins in a row as both sides took to the field for the 120th Northumberland Senior Cup Final. With both sides primed and ready, their match preparations done, the team of 3 officials poised for the off, the sizable crowd expectant for the 7pm kick off, then everyone realised there was no match ball! There then followed 10 minutes of farce as everyone looked around before eventually the 4th official was despatched back to the changing rooms to bring a bag of balls and the game could begin.

Park had made a couple of changes with Phil Morse coming in for the cup tied James Bird, and Liam Blackburn for the unavailable Howard Stock.

Percy Park kicked off and immediately put their opponents under pressure, spending much of the first 5 minutes inside the Morpeth half, before Phil Morse broke down the left and took several defenders with him before setting up a ruck from which the ball was spun right with Michael Stephenson coming into the line at pace to score an unconverted try in the corner.
