HUDDERSFIELD 15 - 33 PERCY PARK

John Scott Secures the WinApologies for the delay , hopefully , it's worth the wait ! The dawn chorus was in full voice as the players , coaches and officials met to travel to Huddersfield YMCA . We have previously encountered Huddersfield , but not the YMCA version based at the Lawrence Batley Centre . The following young men were chosen to represent Park ; Grove , Caulfield , Pike , Tilley , Baldwin , Morse , Scott , Langlands , Wilson , Williamson , Hedley , Thompson , Purdy , Dubois , Cook , subs , Ward , Saint and Hasnip . Recent improved performances meant that Park had no need to feel down about there league position and travelled into darkest deepest Yorkshire determined to pick themselves up and start climbing up the league .

During the warm-up , Park players experienced another first . As is often the norm , during a water break , Coach Purdy waddled over to some bushes to water them . All of a sudden there was a huge commotion coming from the bushes and out ran a startled deer , who had obviously not experienced anything like that before . Now the deer is another Chinese symbol for luck and longevity , the latter being appropriate to our beloved Prop and the former hopefully going to help provide the team with their first win since 24th September .
The match kicked off in remarkably good conditions on a beautiful playing surface in front of a packed , wonderfully named 'Thomas Crapper Stand' . Huddersfield definitely started the brighter of the two sides , but there wasn't a great deal in it . Huddersfield dominating possession but Parks defence was more than comfortable with everything coming at them . The only difference seemed to be the favouring of the home side in decisions , and Huddersfield took an early lead . 0-3 . From the restart , the kick went long , resulting in a line out for Park 30m out from the home sides line . The Park forwards rumbled onwards and with the opposition attempting to halt them illegally , a penalty from Grove brought the scores level . 3-3 .

Huddersfield continued to play the game at a high tempo , stretching play right and then left . After multiple phases , Park were trapped in their own 22 , but again the D was solid . Eventually , a lapse in concentration allowed one of the home teams forwards to sneak over from close range 3-8 . Park reduced the deficit with a long range effort from Morse , 6-8 . A second try from the YMCA followed . A line out on the Park 22 , which was nearly pinched by Park , resulted in a strong run into the Park midfield . Quick ball and good passing created a hole in the Park defence and Huddersfield were in 6-15 . HT .

The second half started in similar manner . Huddersfield trying to spread the ball in attack , Park defending well . One attack , to the Huddersfield left wing and Crapper stand , was halted with a great tackle from Caulfield . Great support at the ruck from the Park centres , allowed Skipper Wilson to pick the loose ball up and charge off down the pitch . However , that wasn't the case , Wilson apparently entered from the side and after a difference of opinion with a YMCA player , needed a 10 minute breather . The unfairness of this decision galvanised Park , from this moment onwards , there was only one side in it .

A Park scrum near the halfway line , saw Scott make a trademark break down the blindside . A couple of years ago , that would've been a score . But those little old legs haven't quite got the pace of old , but he had carried right into the opposition 22 and pulled several Huddersfield players out of position as they attempted to stop the South African . Once again great support from the Park midfield , ensured quick ball , wonderful hands to the gigantor Hedley who fired out a 20 yard pass to Langlands on the wing , the number 8 showing great awareness to sneak around to the posts to make the missed conversion even more of a miss ! A trademark try of Coach Faatau's rugby philosophy . 11-15 .
The restart was returned by Morse to the Parks 10m line . That allowed the naughty boy to return . At the Line out , YMCA missed their man , and the ball went straight to Wilson who set off down the touch line and on and on and on . Nobody could get near the Park flanker and he scored in the corner . Grove made up for his earlier miss by nonchalantly knocking over the conversion . 18-15 . Such was the tempo of the game , water boy Jobson took the opportunity to energise the players with some 'Colin the Caterpillars' , very nice they are to but slightly pricey at £1.50 a packet from M&S . Unfortunately , the sugar rush was too much for Morse . From the resulting restart , the Park fly half put his kick straight out on the full . But to the delight of the 'Thomas Crapper Stand', Morse then feigned injury to his foot as he attempted to mask his mistake . He soon made a footballer like recovery , once he realised the Park physio wasn't attending to him .

Match reporting is a very difficult occupation , especially when the scores were coming so fast . But the following , were the points of note up to the final whistle . The next try was either a charged down clearance kick by Scott who then won the foot race to the touchdown or an effort from Park fullback Grove . Park would score a penalty from Morse . Coach Faatau would get a finger wagging telling off from the ref . 33-15 . Cue jubilant scenes , Hedley showing the whole world the huge gash to his head and dressing room singalongs .

I guess it's true what they say , it's fun to play at the YMCA , you can have a great game , you can have a good meal , you can do whatever you feel ..... If you continue to work hard in training and for each other on the pitch .
