Percy Park Academy Saturday team hosted Consett for the first league game of the season in perfect weather conditions, and using the first team pitch (with grateful thanks to the seconds!).
Park played some neat attacking rugby throughout the game, though unforced errors and imprecise passing along with penalties for ruck offences kept Consett in the game.
Jack Davidson scored the first try going blind from a ruck to crash over in the corner to round off sustained Park pressure. Sean Williamson followed soon afterwards using his considerable bulk and height to force his way to the line to touch down for a 10 - 0 half time score.
Consett upped their game into the second half but Park confined them to the middle of the pitch with good defence. Gradually pressure from Park started to tell and Howard Stock ghosted in to finish a good team move for 15 - 0. Jack Dent added another try from a similar move to go 20 - 0 up. Park introduced players from the bench to give everyone a run out, while Consett scored a consolation try despite what looked like two knock-ons in it's build up. Sean Williamson capped a fine performance with his second try, again a short range smash over the line, converted to make the final score 27 - 5.
Lots to be positive about, things to work on in training, but a good solid start to the league season.
Final score: Percy Park 27 Consett 5
