Morpeth were first on the score sheet when captain Alan Rogers scored the first of his two tries in the corner after some slick handling in the backs. With Matthew Jinks not playing, stand in fly half Nick Harper was handed the kicking duties, although he was unable to convert.
Park replied with a well taken penalty by Brett Sylph after Morpeth had been penalised for handling in the ruck. With the wind advantage, surprisingly Morpeth didn't kick for position but opted to run most of their possession, and with their pacey backs, scored two tries with both wingers getting in on the act. Right wing Anthony Watson scored first and then Alan Rogers went over for his second, and the signs looked ominous for the home side. Fortunately for Park, Nick Mather who assumed kicking duty for the visitors didn't have a good day with the boot, and missed both conversions and two penalty attempts which could have put Morpeth out of sight.
Shortly before half time Brett Sylph kicked a penalty to narrow the deficit but Mather found some form and kicked a penalty of his own, and Morpeth went into the break 18 points to 6 up.
In a penalty strewn game, both kickers were off target and early in the second half Brett Sylph missed a long range attempt to try, but a well worked try by vice captain Mark Walton gave the home side a glimmer of hope in clawing back the Morpeth lead. Liam Casey with one of his trade mark runs broke through the defence and passed inside to Jon Carlile who was tackled ten metres out. Park were able to recycle the ball with Stu Denny making a powerful run and off loading to Mark Walton to cross the line. Sylph missed the conversion attempt and another penalty chance soon after, but was successful with his next effort, and Park were now within four points of the visitors.
Mark Clarkson came on for the injured Thomas Turnbull, and was instrumental in Mark Walton's second try to take the lead. The ball was spun out wide to the right wing, and Clarkson found himself in space with a race to the line to beat the cover defence. The Morpeth back three were all in attendance as the Park winger was tackled on the line but an inside pass allowed Walton to dive over and score under a pile of bodies.
With a rare Park victory on the horizon, there followed a fractious period of play with several scuffles and numerous penalty awards by referee Martin Denver. After Nick Mather had regained the lead for Morpeth with a penalty, Brett Sylph was surprisingly sin binned from the restart for what appeared to be a fair tackle on the ball receiver.
With ten minutes to go, Park couldn't use the possession they had and all too often the ball coming out to the backs was slow allowing the Morpeth defence time to reorganise. With a man advantage Morpeth sealed the victory with a final try by full back Tom Wilkinson. The final score Percy Park 19 - 26 Morpeth.
On a brighter note, Park Pumas made it to the final of the Northumberland No3 Cup, defeating Gosforth Phoenix 33 points to 5 at Bullocksteads. They now meet the winners of the other semi final between Tynedale Grasshoppers and Ponteland II. The final is to be played on Saturday 31st March 2007, venue yet to be decided.
