Percy Park started the game at a quick pace and had most of the possession in Rockcliff's half, and on eight minutes, centre Marcus Turner went over for the first score after Park had been awarded a series of penalties. A quick tap and pass to Phil Morse allowed Turner to take a switch pass in midfield, and he broke through the Rock defensive line to score, and Morse converted.
Rockcliff kept in touch with a penalty kick after Park were adjudged to have gone over the top of a ruck. Former Park junior Andy Webster, playing fly half for the visitors slotted the kick to take the score to 7 - 3.
The home side were unlucky not to stretch their lead soon afterwards when Thomas Turnbull went over on the right wing only to be brought back for a scrum after the touch judge had signal a forward pass to the referee.
On 20 minutes Park scored from a driving maul after a line out close to the Whitley Bay line. Michael Langlands claimed the important touch down, although the try remained unconverted.
Percy Park had most of the territorial advantage in the first half and when Rockcliff pulled down another driving maul close to the line, the referee had no option but to award a penalty try, and Phil Morse converted his kick in front of the posts to take a 19 - 3 lead.
In a rare visit to the Park 22, Rockcliff were awarded a try when Andrew Tweddle touched down a kick to the corner which stayed in play and bounced over the Park line. The touch judged indicated the Park defender had touched down first, but this was surprisingly over ruled by the referee, and at half time Park lead 19 - 8 as Webster was unable to convert.
In the second half the visitors had much more of the possession, and after several changes of personnel to both sides, Rockcliff had several opportunities to cut the Park lead. Webster kicked a penalty to bring the Whitley Bay side closer at 19 - 11.
As the wind got up in the second half and the temperature dropped as the sun went down, so the tempo of the game dropped, and the supporters from both sides were becoming more and more vocal showing their impatience as the game ceased to flow, with penalty after penalty and several lectures from the official in charge. With ten minutes of normal time remaining with Park attacking, Noel Mather prevented the ball coming out of the ruck, and skipper Greg Dixon taking the law into his own hands was sent to the sin bin, as was the Rockcliff openside.
Minutes later Rob Dixon for the visitors was also sin binned for a professional foul close to the line, and with the numerical advantage Park scored their fourth try of the day when Brett Sylph went over in the corner. Soon after, Jonny Birkett cancelled out the score by crossing the Park line after the home side had turned over the ball in their own half.
The game ended with Park winning 24 - 16, although the visitors should be pleased with their dogged defensive display.
