Several players stepped up to the plate in the commitment stakes, with skipper Greg Dixon, Michael Langlands and coach Chris McDine all flying back for the game, then incidentally flying back out to rejoin the party! However it was Chairman of Rugby Thomas Turnbull who showed most commitment in agreeing to play at all when the following day he was due to take part in a triathlon, but then stepping in at scrum half, (a position he hadn't played before) when due to injury and girl friend pressure all 3 1st XV scrum halves were unavailable.
Wallsend on the other hand after their selection problems the previous week were able to field an almost full strength side and indeed opened the scoring with a well taken drop goal on 9 minutes from fly half Peter Hamill. The visitors tails were up, supported by baying from the travelling support on the touch line, which for a spell did get somewhat agricultural and not for the ears of children, grannies or the faint hearted.
It was one of the returning revellers who opened Park's account when Michael Langlands crashed over after a short line out move worked a treat, with ball off the top of the line out popped to hooker Mal Donald, who fed the ball flat to Langlands cutting back in from midfield on the angle to brush aside several defenders to score. Marcus Rutter made good the extra points to take a 7 - 3 lead.
Soon after the lead was extended again from a good line out ball and from the resulting ruck, Mal Donald was again in on the act, but this time passed the ball inside to George Purdy who carted the ball up and then with a deft pop pass to Brett Sylph made the inevitable try for the Park number 8 to score wide out.
It was no surprise that the Park forwards were turning in their best performance of the season so far, under the direction of Thomas Turnbull at number 9. Although not all the passes to fly half were on the money, it was clear that there was a better raport between forwards and backs. It must be something in the genes, as Thomas's father Arthur,an ex Park club captain was also a scrum half.
On the stroke of half time former Wallsend boy Mal Donald scored, with cries from the visitors faithful of 'don't let him score'. Dave Griffiths broke through several tackles in midfield to off load to Donald who was unstoppable from close out. His obvious delight was plain for all to see, and Park went into the break 19 - 3 up after Rutter's conversion.
The second half saw Park with the slight wind advantage and Rutter kicked a penalty after a Wallsend infringement on 10 metres, to keep the score board ticking over. It was Rutter who then made the next try with an incisive break through midfield to feed winger Paul Love to score in the corner, to the chagrin of the visiting support who felt he hadn't grounded the ball.
With 20 minutes remaining Michael Langlands scored his second try of the game again after good possession from the line out. Prop George Purdy who had one of his best games in a Park shirt took the ball on into the heart of the Wallsend defence and passed to Langlands who finished off a period of sustained Park pressure.
With a 32 - 3 lead it seemed as though a big score was on the cards, but the visitors had other ideas and for a good 10 minutes tested the Park defence, but they were unable to increase their points tally. As the game drew to a close, Rutter kicked a penalty after referee Will Halford's patience ran out with the back chat from a couple of the Wallsend players and Percy Park had won 35 - 3. Michael Langlands and Mal Donald were awarded joint 'Man of the Match'
On the far pitch, Park Lions were on the wrong on of a high score losing 56 - 7 to a well drilled Blaydon development side. Park's try came from Stephen McPherson. Percy Park Pumas struggled against Wallsend II losing out 57 - 7. Gary Walton scored Park's only try of the game.
