Percy Park 38 - 3 Ryton

Ashley Smith
Ashley Smith 23 point haul
With seven changes to the side that won away at Horden last week, Park brought in several young players for their first full match debuts, and the young guns were up for it! The average age of the team was just 22, with 17 year old Ashley Smith, and 18 year olds John Scott and Ollie Gilmore coming into the side for their first full games. Ryton too had some late changes, with 2 of their players missing the game due to impending fatherhood.

For the first 10 minutes Percy Park had much of the territorial advantage, but it was the visitors that struck first with a well struck drop goal by Steven Fudge. Park had the chance to draw level soon after when awarded a penalty, but Ash Smith's effort went just wide of the upright.

The home side had several chances to score, the best coming from a chip through, with Brett Sylph and Chris Reekie chasing, but neither were able to pick up the loose ball short of the line and a sure try went begging.

The advantage in the scrum was in Park's favour on the Ryton put in, which was not surprising with the rearranged front row of 3 props, with Craig Biggins coming into the side for Andrew Dunn who was at his brother's wedding. After 29 minutes prop George Purdy had to leave the field, and from that moment on the Park scrum looked a little less secure.

Scrum half John Scott had a chance to score when he made a break up the blind side, only to be brought back for a line out when the myopic touch judge put his flag up for a toe nail in touch.

With half time beckoning, Park's Ash Smith broke the dead lock with a searing break through the Ryton midfield to score under the posts, and then converted his own try to lead 10 -3 at the half time interval.

The elements were in home side's favour in the second half and on 56 minutes Park stretched their lead with a try by stand in skipper Brett Sylph after a catch and drive from a line out in the Ryton 22. Ash Smith converted from wide out to stretch the lead to 17 - 3. In a repeat of his first try Ashley Smith again broke through a gap in the visitors defence, and used his pace (obviously inherited from his mother's side of the family) to cross the line and again convert.

Ryton were finding it difficult to get out of their own half, and were unable to capitalise on the limited possession they did secure. With the advantage of a cross wind, Park were able to keep the visitors in their own 22, and Adam Fidler crossed the line at the bottom of a heap of players, to score Park's fourth try after a driving maul, with the Ryton players remonstrating with the referee for not giving them advantage for a previous infringement. Ash Smith was again accurate with his conversion attempt on 67 minutes.

With just over 10 minutes in the match remaining, there was a series of fracas involving several players from both sides, and referee Andy McDonough sent a player from both sides to the sin bin. Now here is a coincidence, Anthony Brett Sylph was binned for Park, and Anthony Brett for Ryton!

There was a bit of a lull in the game when uncontested scrums were introduced, but Marcus Turner reignited Park's spirits, with a powerful solo effort, evading or bouncing off no fewer than seven would be tacklers, to score under the posts and Ash Smith brought his own individual tally of points to 23 with the conversion.

The game ended 38 - 3, and Park's selectors will have some hard decisions on who should play in next weeks game, when Percy Park return to Welfare Park to play Horden in round 3 of the EDF Energy Senior Vase.
