Two tries for McPherson

Once again due to the inclement weather, there was no Ist XV rugby as Park's game away to Ryton was called off due to a frozen pitch. The gradual rise in temperature over the day meant that at 2.15 pm the only home game at Park could go ahead against Blyth II.

Both Park and Blyth fielded teams with a mixture of old heads, and youthful exhuberence, and as it was one of the few games in Northumberland, had more support than the usual one man and a dog.

Park opened the scoring kicking down the slope, with a try by prop James "Pie" McFarlane, who scuttled the last 22 metres to score in the corner. The acute angle meant the conversion was unsuccesful. Park looked dangerous with ball in hand, and despite the advancing years of the half back pairing of Shepherd and Davey, the centre combination of Ovington and Gray ran everything at the blyth defence. The visitors to their credit defended doggedly and kept the score to 5 - 0 until a penalty gave Gary Davy a chance to increase the Park lead to 8 - 0.

Blyth had several chances of their own to cut back the deficiet, but the home side scored again with a well taken try in the corner by wing Stephen McPherson. Again the conversion was missed, but Park were now in a 13 - 0 lead. Shortly before half time Blyth pulled a score back when good chasing up allowed Chris Brooks to score, and Barry Smith was unlucky with the conversion attempt which hit the post.

In the second half Blyth had more of the play, and but for a few knock ons and handling errors, could have made more of the attacking moves with their back line. Percy Park scored again, this time through number 8 Ian Bradley who hit a driving Park maul on the Blyth 22, and emerged with the ball in hand to power over the line to score with an outstetched arm. This time the conversion was succesful and skipper Gary Davy took the score to 20 - 5.

Blyth quickly hit back when Stu Brown crossed the Park try line to score and Barry Smith kicked the conversion. Stephen Mcpherson then scored again on the left wing for his second try of the day, and the score ended 25 - 12 in Park's favour.
