Park showed their bouncebackabilty with the double over Rovers and back to back wins in successive weeks, to momentarily lift the spectre of relegation. In a keenly contested match which proved a little firery at times, Park held out to win 22 - 29. The games between Park and Rovers are always close affairs as the 16 - 11 home win earlier in the season can testify.
Full back Marcus Rutter kicked Park's first points with two penalties inside 6 minutes.Rovers hit back with a try from Darren Smith, although the some of the visiting supporters were bemused that the referee appeared to have signalled a Park advantage for a knock on before allowing play to continue as the Rovers pack rumbled to the line with Smith touching down. Phill Hall put his side into the lead with the easy conversion attempt.
Minutes later Martin Shaw regained the lead for the visitors with a well executed drop goal, and in a see saw game, Phil Hall kicked a penalty to take back the lead momentarily. Skipper Brett Sylph, back from injury was making an impact on the game and scored a try after charging down a clearance kick by Rovers. Rutter kicked the extras and Park now led 10 - 16.
A bout of fisty cuffs then ensued, and surprisingly Park's winger Phil Thompson was sent to the sin bin. Just before the half ended Rutter extended the lead with another penalty.
In the second half prop Darren Smith scored his second try of the game for the home side, then soon after Rovers were awarded a penalty try as Percy Park were penalised for repeated offending close to their line. With the Sainty conversion Hartlepool Rovers now took the lead 22 - 19.
Park struck back immediatley when centre Marcus Turner broke through the Rovers defences and evading several tackles made it to the line to score, and Park were back in the lead as Rutter converted. A further penalty stretched the lead to 22 - 29, and with only minutes to go Park continued the attack and were surprisingly penalised by the referee for collapsing a scrum close to the Hartlepool line in an attempted push over try.
Eight minutes of injury time kept the visiting supporters nerves jangling, but the final whistle meant that Park had secured another vital two points. After four weeks on the road, Percy Park end the season with two home games, with Driffield visiting Preston Avenue next Saturday, and the final game of the season on the 1st May against Old Crossleyans.
