Unfortunately for Berwick , this wasn`t the day that they kick-started their season but the day the Lions finally put the opposition away. Park lined up with Watson, Wafer, Blakey, Clyde, Bartle, Robson, Fidler,
With the excitement of an evening of fireworks ahead, it was Park who exploded from the kick-off. A sparkling run by Cinema Phil down the left wing resulted in a try for Firth but Spowett was unable to add the extras as his attempt at the posts drifted wide (very unusual !!). Gould then scored a firecracker of a try followed by Firths second to take the score to 15-0. The art of line-out throwing was not very evident, as both throwers struggled to find their own jumpers. Perhaps it was the confusion of the strips clashing, Parks bold white/black bands struggling to be seen against the Berwick all black outfit!
Park were able to dominate the scrum and with Fidler pick-pocketing the breakdown there was still a constant supply of ball. Unfortunately we kicked a little bit too much but still managed to give a display of 15man rugby. Beefy Bartle managed to work his sizeable frame over the line for two scores. Half-time confirmation from the ref that the score was 31-0, meant that Spowett had managed to knock over 3 conversions.
Park made a couple of changes at half-time with debutant Robson, who made a fine start to senior rugby, being replaced by Bradley and Watson resting his burnt fingers for Pie. Well that’s the excuse I am giving him for his throwing . Watson was soon back into the fray with Pie being forced off the pitch with a twisted ankle after a couple of trademark screeching runs. Bradley was accused of scoring a push-over try when he had quite clearly made a complete hash of it, but it was our day and that’s the way it goes.
Captain Clyde notched another as did Gould. Centre Firth had finally regained his breath from the first-half and completed his hat-trick, as did Gould moments later. Bradley scored his second and with Spowett making 3 second-half conversions the game ended 67-0.
Highlights of the day, Alun`s tantrum, Firthy blowing out his backside, Damiens drop goal attempt when the score was 55-0, Austin saying he needed to come off because he was injured and then immediately setting off at full tilt on a 50 metre run, and, the fireworks.
