NORTHUMBERLAND SENIOR CUP

PERCY PARK 13 – 25 NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY

Ash Smith Dodges the Team Northumbria DefensePercy Park 1st XV couldn’t emulate the previous week’s success of the Lions and regain the County Cup that they had held for 3 out of the past 4 seasons. During the week press reports and Facebook commented on the claim that the University were struggling to field a team, and although Park too were without a number of their regular 1st XV several of the Lions squad stepped up and performed well to stake their claim for the 1st XV shirt.

Park warmed up in the balmy Morpeth spring sunshine sporting their “stay strong Stu” tee shirts in support of 25 year old Tynedale player Stu Ridley who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

Park notoriously slow starters held out until the 6th minutes before Adam King capitalised on a turnover and broke through some ineffective tackling in the defensive line, to score under the posts. A determined charge of the conversion by Liam Blackburn did enough to ensure scrum half Gary Andrews kick went wide of the mark.

Pocklington 35 – 21 Percy Park

Josh Hedley Bursts Through the Ruck to Score Parks First Try23 league games gone and 3 to go before the end of season 2014/15. Park will be looking to regroup for next term as the string of defeats continued away to Pocklington. Once again for goodness knows how many times this season Park conceded a try inside 2 minutes as Pock wing Archie Fothergill went in at the corner and full back Jack Fletcher slotted the difficult conversion.

Minutes later Fletcher put his side 10 – 0 ahead with a dubious penalty that the referee awarded despite both touch judges saying the kick went wide of the posts.

Having gone behind, Percy Park then started playing some rugby and Josh Hedley burst through a ruck near the Pocklington line to open the visitor’s account and fly half Paul Spowart converted. Just before the break Spowart levelled the scores with a penalty as Park took some advantage of the home side being without hooker Ben Stephenson who had been sin binned for a professional foul.

NORTH ONE EAST

NORTHERN 5 - 10  PERCY PARK

Harry Watson Pressuring the Northern DefenceThere are a number of claims to origins of the phrase “winning ugly” but whoever coined the term, Percy Park certainly gave it full meaning in an awful game for the spectator.

Northern kicked off with a tail wind as the drizzle began to fall as if on cue to the referees whistle to commence proceedings. The short trip across town hardly excused the lack lustre start as Park failed to secure the ball ceding possession to the home side from the off.

A bustling run by hooker Sam Wilson kept the visitors on the back foot and eventually Paddy Harper went over in the right hand corner for a try within the first 3 minutes of play. Full back Shane Wright, recently returned from Australia was given the kicking duties, but missed the conversion attempt.

Park then spent most of the first forty minutes inside their own half, but although Northern looked sharper in the back line, Percy Park’s defence held firm and Wright had a penalty kick to extend the lead, but his effort was well wide.

NORTH 1 EAST

PERCY PARK 44 – 16 OLD CROSSLEYANS

Scrum Down in the HailstormNot even a hailstorm could dampen Park’s second half 6 try blitz of league strugglers Old Crossleyans, which is just as well, because the first half performance was like the weather – mixed. Crossleyans were still in the game  until the 65th minute when the scores were 18 – 16, but ran out of steam at the end.

Both sides took to the field in bright sunshine, and Park dominated possession for 19 of the first 20 minutes, although Crocs were first on the scoreboard with a minute played as left wing Chris Vine touched down in the corner.

Percy Park saw the return to the squad of James Ponton, Brett Sylph and Ali Blair. But were missing the influential Andy Dunn and Ben Bell from the pack. Another season’s debutant Marc Cook was the front row replacement, and Jonny Dubois stepped into the hooker spot after a good performance last week in the back row.

The home side’s first points came from the boot of Paul Spowart after a quarter of an hour, but were denied 2 tries as the Old Crossleyans defence held up the Park forwards over the line.
