The Lions continued to promote their inclusive approach and were again able to include a number of colts in the squad.
Whole place buzzing

Park started like a team possessed and from the kick off used a series of forward surges to put Alnwick on the back foot. Good use of possession saw the backs involved early, with both centres and Liam B featuring in some good attacks. However, despite dominating possession and territory a degree of inexperience, poor hands and Solid Alnwick defence meant the scoreboard was not troubled until the 11th minute when Andrew Walker spotted a chink in the defence and was quick witted enough to ghost through the gap and score, Ben A adding the extras.

North One East

Sheffield 17 – 10 Percy Park

With both teams having won their last 6 consecutive league games, top played 2^nd at Abbeydale as Park travelled to play Sheffield. Interestingly 3^rd placed Wheatley Hills were playing 4^th spot Dinnington in a “super Saturday” for North 1 East.

Conditions were cold but ideal for rugby but for the low winter sun which Sheffield had to contend with in their eyes for the 1^st half. It soon became apparent that this was a top of the table clash as a fast paced game unfolded with both sides evenly matched, although Park probably had more of the possession.

With Rich Berne, Harry Watson, Josh Hedley and James Ponton all unable to travel, Park made a few adjustments with Jonny Kidd as front row replacement, Stu Cannon into the back row, Karl Thompson at lock and Toby Davison moved in from the wing to centre to allow the return of Liam Blackburn. Unfortunately Davison took a knock early on, and replacement Michael Grove came on earlier than he would have anticipated.

NORTH 1 EAST

PERCY PARK 32 – 8 WEST HARTLEPOOL

In the run up to this game, coach Ed Midcalf was quoted in the local press saying that Park would run the ball wide at every opportunity, but in reality conditions dictated otherwise and 3 of Park’s 4 tries came from the pack, with Andy Dunn on the end of 2 of them.

With floodlights warming up as the players did likewise, a light rain fell as the game kicked off making conditions greasy for handling. West kicked off and put themselves under immediate pressure as the ball went dead and Park were awarded the put in to a scrum on half way.

The first score came inside 4 minutes when the visitors were penalised for pulling down a maul and Ash Smith put Park on the scoreboard with a well- taken penalty. He could have doubled the score minutes later when West again infringed in their own half, but the kick went wide.

The match day program showed Dan Boatman to be West’s skipper, but on the day the team were marshalled from the back by Stu Waites, although Boatman soon incurred the wrath of referee Graham Crozier with his repeated infringing around the contact area.
