Another mid week game for the Lions, Park’s Development team, and another entertaining match, which I’m sure benefited both clubs. Seghill have struggled over the last 2 seasons, and it is good for club rugby in Northumberland that they are now able to field two regular teams.
PERCY PARK LIONS 31 – 7 CONSETT II
This was a good advert for development rugby, as both Park and Consett fielded young teams of players aspiring towards 1st XV rugby. The mid week game attracted a reasonable crowd who were entertained by two sides looking to play expansive rugby, and although the score line looks a little one sided in truth Park took the chances they had, and a resolute defence kept Consett at bay.
On a surface resembling a bog in places, a young Percy Park Lions side took on an older, more experienced Novo's.
Park will be hoping to start next season’s North One East campaign the way they finished off 2009/10, with four consecutive wins, the last of which was a fine win at home to Old Crossleyans. This game should have been played back in January, but was a casualty of the winter snow, so the game was rearranged for 1st May, two weeks after the original closing date of the season.
It has to be said that both teams were not at full strength, but produced a good game of running rugby, assisted in no small part by referee Mickey Reid, who allowed both teams to play, and so entertain the May Day crowd.
