Hartlepool Rovers 8 – 44 Percy Park

John-Scott
John Scott Scores His Second Try
With pre-season complete, Park travelled to the New Friarage to take on Hartlepool Rovers in the first league game of the 2010/11 North One East campaign. Conditions were good for a running game which suited the visitors, but the wind was tricky which made kicking difficult. Rovers kicked off with the wind at their backs, and in bright sunshine.

Early exchanges were scrappy with several knock ons from both sides, but Park were always more adventurous, and player coach James Ponton scored first for Park after 9 minutes after skipper John Scott had taken a quick tap penalty, he was stopped short of the line but from the resulting ruck Craig Fidler took the ball on and offloaded to Ponton for the try. With regular kicker Marcus Rutter absent, kicking duties fell to Ashley Smith, who had to take his first conversion attempt without a kicking tee, a salutary lesson to be prepared before kick off. The conversion hit the post and stayed out.

PERCY PARK 56 – 0 PONTELAND

Ponteland brought two squads to Preston Avenue in the final Saturday before the league season starts proper. Although neither side was at full strength as some key players took a break over the bank holiday weekend, the first encounters were fairly even. Park opened their account when full back Alan Barlow went over in the right hand corner after a break from Ash Smith set the move going. With regular kicker Marcus Rutter unavailable, Barlow assumed kicking duties, but was unsuccessful with his first attempt.

Wallsend brought a squad of some 25 players to Preston Avenue for a pre-season training game against a mixed Park squad. The opening 40 minute session saw Percy Park field a strong side, although there were still one or two 1st XV regulars missing due to holiday and work commitments. The session ended with Park up 28 - 0 after tries from Rutter, Scott, Reekie and Smith and four conversions by Rutter.

Percy Park 36 - 26 Tynedale Raiders

Park's 1st XV and Lions squad took on Tynedale Raiders last evening in a training game to warm up for the season proper which begins on 4th September 2010. Park scored three tries in the opening session two from Martin Potts at number eight. Martin aged 25 has returned to the club after several years away from rugby, but the former North of England Colt looked very promising at the back of the scrum.

Both teams used all of their large squads, with Park having nearly 40 players available, which did not include the 25 Academy players who were training on the 1st XV pitch.

Percy Park Lions 15 – 7 Alnwick II

With a break in the league for 1st XV rugby, all eyes were on the up and coming players of the second XV; well not all eyes, as there was an international on TV between England and some touring team, so some found it difficult to prise themselves from the comfy seats. For those who ventured outdoors, there was some promising rugby on display from both sides, with Park holding out winners to advance their position in the Candy League Division 2.

So far Alnwick were unbeaten in the league with six from six, and Park had won all but their encounter against Gateshead II, so the match up between last years Northumberland No2 Cup finalists was likely to be a close affair.
