PERCY PARK 25 – 38 GUISBOROUGH

Craig Smith in actionDespite opening the scoring with a Craig Smith try on 12 minutes, Park’s season finale was a disappointing one as they went down to a lively and spirited Guisborough side. Conditions were good for running rugby as the pitch had dried out well from last week’s downpour.

Over 140 former players, guests, sponsors and officials enjoyed a pre- match lunch and although neither Park nor Guisborough could improve on their current league position, both sides were out to end their season on a high.

After the early exchanges, it was clear that this was going to be a high scoring game, and so it proved, although Percy Park dominated the set piece. When Guisborough did have possession, their pacey back line had the hosts in all sorts of trouble, particularly fly half Will Muir who opened the scoring with an unconverted try for the visitors a minute after Park had gone into a 7 – 0 lead.

Two minutes later Guisborough were ahead when number 8 Michael MacDougall scored in the corner, and once again the conversion was wide. Paul Spowart’s 25th minute penalty kick levelled the scores at 10 – 10.

BEVERLEY 25 – 31 PERCY PARK

Michael Langlands Scores His First of Two TrysPark completed the double over Beverley leaving it late once again, with a Davy Kay 80th minute try from the final play of the game with the referee playing advantage as the hosts were unable withstand the Percy Park onslaught.

Beaver Park, home of the East Yorkshire side is well known for being somewhat boggy and an overnight deluge put the game in doubt. The home side’s ground staff volunteers, moved heaven and earth and a good deal of the wet stuff to ensure the game could be played, but in the end the teams had to settle for playing the game on the second team pitch.

Phil Doublay for Beverley and Paul Spowart for Park traded penalty kicks in the first 3 minutes before the visitors edged ahead with another Spowart goal on 6 minutes. Park had the wind and slope in the first half as squally shower bleached across the pitch making handling tricky. Nevertheless Beverley’s young back line looked effective with ball in hand and crossed the Park line with a try by centre Jack Garvin on the quarter hour mark. Doublay was wide with the conversion, but the home side now led 8 – 6.

PERCY PARK 10 - 24 WEST HARTLEPPOOL

Paul Spowart on target with first penaltyWest made the relatively short trip up the A19 for their last away match of the current season having won the corresponding fixture at Brinkburn 23 – 10 earlier in the season.

Mark Antonopoulos made his 1st XV debut from the bench for the home side, and Marc Cook and Austin Phillips returned to the starting line-up as did Liam Scott as he moved up from the bench after an impressive display last week.

Percy Park started well but it was the visitors who were first on the scoreboard with a 7 minute try by lock Jay Corbett from a line out where Park were caught napping at the back. Ryan Painter kicked the extras.

Park responded on 18 minutes with a Spowart penalty, and most of the remainder of the half was played between the two 22’s in an arm wrestle where neither side could press home an advantage.

Park had much of the territory, but it was the West back line that looked far more potent in attack with the Painter brothers at 9 and 10 creating a good link between forwards and the three quarter line.

Last minute win over Wheatley Hills

PERCY PARK 16 - 15 WHEATLEY HILLS

The Match Winning TryAlthough both sides are in the bottom half of the league at the present time, a win for Wheatley would have helped ease their relegation chances, and with 3 minutes remaining it looked as though the visitors had pulled off an unlikely win at Preston Avenue.

Once again the Park side were reshuffled with no fewer than five changes of personnel in the squad. Jonny Dubois came into the side for the injured Andy Dunn, Rich Berne moved into the centre for the unavailable Guy Pike, Leo Caulfield and Kieran Sutherland filled the wing positions and Toby Davison moved to fullback for the injured Michael Grove. Jonathan Kidd came back into the front row for Marc Cooke and the man who has had more come-back’s than Frank Sinatra – veteran prop George Purdy filled the front row replacement spot.

The conditions were wet which didn’t help with handling and the game was officiated once again by Northumberland’s Greg Dawson.

Wheatley Hills are renowned for their strong forward pack, and they earned a penalty try in the 23rd minute as Park’s scrum was under pressure as the scrummage collapse inches short of the try line. The conversion by Owen Gillvray took the visitors into a 7 – 0 lead.

NORTHUMBERLAND SENIOR CUP FINAL

PERCY PARK 3 – 21 MORPETH

For the second consecutive year Park were to taste disappointment in the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup Final. Last year Park lost to Northumbria University at Morpeth and this year succumbed to Morpeth with the game played at McCracken Park.

There was a good Easter Saturday crowd at the home of Northern FC for the 1pm KO, and thankfully for all present the heralded storm Katie delayed her arrival.

A late change to the Park side saw the withdrawal of Phil Morse with a chest infection, so Paul Spowart came in fly half. Mark Cook was back into the front row for Jonathan Kidd, Ricki Hasnip for Sam Jobson and Toby Davison for Lome Fa’atau who dropped to the bench.

Park started well but it was Morpeth who drew first blood with a well worked try finished off by scrum half Jack Elliot on six minutes. James Phillips converted for a 7 – 0 lead.
