On a glorious spring afternoon, The Lions travelled to Ponteland to face Morpeth in the No.2 cup final. Having defeated their opponents on two occasions already, Park were in confident mood.
Ward Ross Kidd Ssssshnairn Saint Aaron Jake Reekie Gilmore Hasnip Kyle Jobson Greswold Sim Gould the finishers Sanderson Hennessey Ponton Ben James Beans.
For regular readers of my match reports, a quick look at the above team shows that yet again there were a few changes due to unavailabilities, injuries, promotions to 1stxv and a scheduled colts game. However a late cancellation of that game resulted in Park being able to select a few of their colts. Yet again, without them we would've been short in number even for The game of the season! However the side was a good reflection of the lads who have represented the side in a tough but rewarding season.

NORTHUMBERLAND SENIOR SHIELD
PERCY PARK LIONS 68 - 29 SEGHILL
It's been a busy old week for the Lions. On Wednesday night, Park welcomed Seghill in a No2 cup semi final and then on Saturday, Billingham Lions provided the opposition in a Candy Plate semi-final.
In both fixtures, Park assembled a senior side i.e. no colts, with our outstanding youngsters focusing on their own cup game at Berwick.
In the Seghill game, Park started at a fast pace, hoping to run the enthusiasm out of the visitors. However, Seghill had other ideas, the first 40 minutes were very keenly contested with only a score separating the two sides. Park then blitzed their opponents at the beginning of the second half, eventually winning 68-29. It was a very entertaining game and despite the score-line a close contest. Park now play Morpeth in final at Ponteland on 25th March KO 2pm.

Novos II 13-14 Percy Park Lions
The Lions travelled to Sutherland Park for a league / cup winner takes all . The squad assembled was a young and exciting one ; Gallon , Kidd , Ssssshnairn , Phillips , Barry , Smith , Young , Lake , Gilmore , Anderson , Sutherland Ky , Jobson , Reece , Wrightson , Sutherland Ki , subs , Stoddart , Reekie , Barclay , Jobson . Park were in determined mood , keen to progress in the cup and eager to avenge the defeat inflicted by their hosts at Preston Avenue in the season opener . Coach Jobson more than a little determined for victory after his wasted journey a few weeks ago to a frozen pitch ! Sorry Graham , need to get it off my chest!
Skipper Lake lost the toss and Park kicked off with the strong wing blowing from the Ministry on their backs . In the early exchanges , things were pretty even . Park took control of the scrum and their lineout functioned smoothly . Novos looked to attack through their No.8 and through their right wing . The only scores in the half came from the boot of Parks fly half Anderson , when Park decided to take the points on offer .
Frozen pitch at Sutherland Park

Despite a heavy overnight frost , Parks Lions met at Preston Avenue in good spirit and in good numbers . Ahead of them , a trip to Sutherland Park to face the mighty Vo's . Vo's have won 3 league games to date , one of those being against Park earlier in the season . With Park sitting second in the League , a bonus point win was the objective . With time approaching 1230 and no news from Novos , off we set .
5 minutes into the journey and Coach Jobson was having to return to home , having remembered his coat still hung on the bannister . This manoeuvre brought complete bewilderment from Josh Lake , following in car number 2 . Panic set in when he saw his coach travelling in the wrong direction . Seconds after the two cars passed each other , Lake was on the phone asking what was happening . His panic soon turned to joy when he was told of the reason for the travel in the wrong direction , gleefully telling the coach that he would be fined for his stupidity !
Trying to avoid the traffic was quiet a test on a bright but chilly winters day . Holystone roundabout providing the first test . A great decision saw a swift u-turn and an approximate saving of 15 minutes as The Park players headed back to the roundabout and take the next turning up past the Holystone pub . However it wasn't all plain sailing at the next roundabout with several baffoons blocking keep clear sections and other idiots entering the roundabout when their exits were already blocked .
It seemed that there was no way through past Asda Benton , so the journey was to continue towards Killingworth . The lead car was lucky not to escape a serious injury , when , having just passed the huge Sambuccas , a lady driver in a black golf came swerving out of an estate entrance completely unaware of the Park car already on the main road . Great reactions from the Park driver avoided a collision which would've probably seen a season ending injury .
With the journey almost complete and four lane ends in sight , then came the phone call all the players were dreading . At no less than 1:16 the game had been cancelled by the referee . Less the an hour before KO and with a couple of car loads of Park players already there and changed !! Furious is an understatement , so let's leave it at that . However that isn't in my nature , and what I would like to point out is that Candy League rules stipulate that if your pitch is unplayable (i.e. Frozen) then the game should be switched if the pitches are fit for purpose !
So , back to Park where 4 sides were about to enjoy a game of rugby . But not the unlucky Lions .
Massive thank you to Rich B for taking the lads for some circuit training and to the lads for not wasting their entire Saturday by putting in some graft .
