A hard-fought physical game dominated by the panthers racked up another win for the ever-improving ladies’ team from Preston Avenue.

Looking sharp in their new kits sponsored by PGS Law, Emerald Legal Services and Health and Safety Training Ltd.  The panthers set up to face local rivals Blaydon for the second time this season. With the last game finishing in panthers favour this was a pivotal game for the ladies at home wanting to assert their dominance in the league.

With the pitch bearing the scars of a busy weekends Rugby the girls won the toss and chose to receive the ball.

A strong start with powerful Runs from Lauren Calvert and Steph Giquel charging through the defensive line of Blaydon. Smart, swift rucking by the panthers enabled clean ball for scrum

Half Chloe Bland to get the ball away.

With the Panthers dominating the scrum Blaydon were charged back on both scrums though some early pushes penalised the overzealous black and whites.

Replacement line out jumper Vicky Moxom shifted between the line outs and full back, her jumping clinical and effective, to the delight of the balcony.

Though the team does boast some senior players there are plenty more new players developing through and for some this was only their second game. Charlotte Gullian our winger played a full game and was sensational - definitely one to watch for the future.

The girls played with maturity and great structure, taking their well worked drills from training onto the pitch. Supporting play was vastly improved from their recent game against Stockton and this enabled them to penetrate the gain line on several occasions.

Clever kicking by Blaydon’s backs putting a great deal of pressure on the panthers.

The return of Nesha Wood was welcomed with her snaking Runs and powerful rucking taking Blaydon by surprise

A lack of discipline saw Blaydon receiving the only yellow card of the day, followed swiftly by a second for their coach.

The girls held their resolve until the final whistle and totally deserved the win. Forward of the match went to Alex for her hard work in the rucks and great hands under the high balls, our back of the match Caitlin who made some amazing try saving tackles and was all over the pitch.

With plenty to work on in the next 3 weeks before heading down to Houghton the girls will re charge and go again but the future is looking bright.

National League Division 3

Hartlepool  RUFC 10 v Percy Park Panthers 20

IMG 7372 1

The Percy Park Panthers made the short Journey to Hartlepool RFC this afternoon, in their third league game of the season. With the weather less than ideal it was shaping up to be a muddy clash.

The girls started their warm up in heavy rain, but spirts were high, smiles and laughter helping them through.

The first kick of the game went to the visitors and the boot of Lauren Calvert saw the ball soaring towards the Hartlepool ladies, chased hungrily by the returning captain Anna Dryden who hit the recipient with everything she had, causing them to lose the ball allowing the visitors to take early control.

A powerful run by prop for the day Lauren gained precious territory and the quick hands and feet of Sarah Laybourne on the wing saw the Panthers cross over for the first try just 4 minutes into the game. The conversion just wide of the posts.

The restart was gathered cleanly by newbie lock Jenny Wood and she set off for the try line followed closely by fellow second rower Katherine Taylor whose hard work in the rucks was invaluable.

After several strong carries Steph “Roadrunner” Giquel carved her way through the defence scoring a beautiful individual try from the half way line, spurred on by cheers from the dug out of “I need my inhaler”!

The Panthers were now 2 tries up after just 7 minutes on the clock.

The restart failing to go 10 metres and a miscommunication led to a scrum to the Panthers, music to ears of Number 8, Demi Agar breaking off and storming up 30 metres before finally being brought to the ground.

An unfortunate knock on by Park saw the home team gain possession, however the tenacity of Park’s defence gave their fly half (disguised as a prop wearing number 1 ) had no option but to kick for territory and find touch.

With a great throw in from the ever-improving hooker Alex, who had another rumbustious day, the loose ball was picked up by the other Calvert, today playing flank and a welcome addition to the pack.

After being tackled the ball was protected by Dryden and with Chloe Bland at 9 passing the ball out to the expert hands of Moxom at 10 and onto returning centre Bethany Milne, returning from an earlier shoulder injury;the back line looking amazing with Liv Shanks slotting in perfectly.

A lapse in concentration saw the Panthers give away a penalty with Hartlepool kicking to touch to find themselves in the Panthers 22 for the first time of the game.

After winning the lineout the home side tried tirelessly to penetrate the Panthers defence, but this was not to be.

Finally, the speed of the defensive line was too much and forced the error from Hartlepool allowing for some breathing space and an all-important break from the back of the scrum from Agar with Dryden in hot pursuit for the tip.

Another few passages of play saw the panthers penalised for sealing off.

Hartlepool sensing that going through the defence was not going to work opting for a chip and chase, however this was well read by Laybourne who was already tracking back to prevent the try. The ball was cleared once more by Lauren and though Hartlepool regained possession, the physicality of Panthers Jenny Wood caused them to lose the ball in the tackle.

For a few minutes it seemed nobody wanted to hold on to the ball but finally Beth scooped the ball up and set off once more. Unable to capitalise on their dominance Hartlepool regained possession and after 7 try saving tackles by the Panthers the home side finally crossed the white line to score their first try 30 minutes after the game had begun. The conversion falling short.

With the Panthers regaining possession after the restart there was some more excellent handling between the 8 and scrum half.

Despite a strong start possession changed hands once more and it was Hartlepool’s turn to cause some problems. This was to be short lived as the experience of Dom Hepples led to the stealing of the ball and an excellent kick chase followed by Laybourne -on fire today-with the home side penalised for holding on the Panthers tightened their grip and went for the kill, charge after charge with Lauren finally crossing the white wash with what seemed like 4 Hartlepool ladies hanging on to her.

The restart found its way to Jenny again and though the take was magnificent, a great tackle by the opposition caused her to knock on.

Hartlepool took on the challenge spreading the ball wide to the wing. More great tackles and some great rucking by winger Melissa Castanares held off the attack. A crucial scrum to Hartlepool led to a messy pile of bodies but the Panthers taking their foot of the gas for a split second enabled Hartlepool to sneak through, pick up the ball and run through for their second try.

The re-start was gathered well by Hartlepool, but they were stopped in their tracks by a phenomenal tackle from Fullback Caitlin Stokoe, the spilled ball was picked up by Steph who was once again dancing through the defenders.

Hartlepool stole possession only for a crucial jackle by the tireless Anna Dryden to return possession  to the Panthers and a lovely link up between forward and back Demi and Mel, saw some beautiful support play between the pair and a lovely try for Mel; a real display of players supporting each other until the job is done.

Though there were a few more opportunities by both sides and some great tackles by replacement Marie Watson, which undoubtedly stopped the home side capitalising on any ground made. The score remained Hartlepool 10 v Panthers 20 and Percy Park had their first senior win of the weekend and the Panthers now stand joint second in National Championship Division 3.

A first as Panthers tame the Tigers

IMG 7600

Sunday saw a history making first league win for Percy Park Panthers.

Percy Park welcomed the Ponteland Tigers to Preston Avenue today for their second league game of the season.

With slightly depleted numbers, Ponteland struggled to field a full squad. Percy Park were keen to play the fixture and generously loaned the Tigers players to enable the game to go ahead.

The Panthers now disguised as Tigers worked hard and to the untrained eye blended in as they gave 100% to the new shirt, showing a spectacular commitment to the game.

The first 5 minutes was a bit frantic, with both teams struggling to settle and it was the Tigers who struck first scoring beneath the posts and securing the conversion.

Showing their growing confidence and maturity the Panthers regrouped, refocused, and went back to basics taking back control of the game.

IMG 7603

Great handling from the backs resulting in a stunning try to equalise through the hands of centre Liv Shanks, with another soon after by captain Vicky Moxom which she generously tried to gift to fellow back Shanks. Had she known Shanks had plans to run 2 more of her own, she needn’t have, however it was a touching display of a true team player. The extras added by the boot of the ever reliable number 8 Lauren Calvert who provided another powerful performance, bouncing off would be tacklers.

As the Panthers took back control, their hard work in training paid off with slick handling and effective rucking. Strong running from hooker Alex Goldsborough and second row Sheona McIntyre, saw Percy Park gain crucial territory.

Another great passage of play saw Paige Wood sprinting up the wing almost reaching the try line.

IMG 7604

Though uncontested scrums, Chloe Bland moved the ball well from the base. Her passes showed great distance and precision, allowing the ball to reach the capable hands of Vicky Moxom. A deft pass fed Caitlin Monteath-Stokoe for another one of her spirited runs. On this occasion well tackled by one of the Tigers. A fumble of the ball found the expert hands of fullback Dom Hepples and her dancing feet nipped through for another Panthers try, bagging herself the first of 6 conversions.

There were some sniping runs from flanker Nesha Wood slicing through the opposition adding another try to the ever-growing Panther tally.

Quick thinking and great handling skills saw Anna Ford scooping up a loose ball and taking it forward, allowing the backline of the Panthers to realign and go again.

IMG 7605

Multiple injuries from a truly physical clash, saw players from both sides taking to the bench. This saw the return of debutant Jenny Wood to the black and white hoops of Park and once again she charged straight back in, hitting every ruck with the same energy as she had started with 70 minutes ago! Her energy contributing to her forward of the match award.

Katherine Taylor, also on her debut run out added great running and strong tackling to the Ponteland team.

Though the Tigers fought back, the skill of the Panthers was too much and another brilliant display of handling saw the ball reach the hands of Sarah-Jane Laybourne patiently waiting for her turn to shine.

A big thank you to the players who agreed to play for the opposition and also to the supporters (mostly Beth) in the grandstand for their persistent positivity for the Panthers. A great game to watch.

Panthers stung by Hornets

Vicky Moxom

A bumper crowd watched Percy Park Panthers first league game of the season at Preston Avenue on Sunday.

The Panthers took the field without a recognised 10 after Dom Hepples fell ill on the morning of the game and with a new scrum half. Chloe Bland making her first team debut at nine.

The game also saw debuts for Charlean Wright, Mary Tunmore, Paige Wood, Marie Butler and Demi Agar who just happens to be, Charlean‘s daughter.

Notwithstanding the hastily rearranged back line and the arrival of the newbies the Panthers acquitted themselves well for the first quarter with the defence coming out on top and some big hits coming in from Charlean, Paige, Demi, Steph Cicquel and Marie.

Some strong running from the recently wed Beth and Lauren Calvert alongside Steph and Demi had the whole team on the front foot. One bullocking 50 yard run from Beth ended in a tantalisingly close decision that saw Demi Agar held up over the line and a goal line dropout given.

The disappointment caused a momentary lack of concentration on the Panthers left flank and the Hornets took full advantage with a well taken wingers try.

Two further converted tries were conceded in short order before halftime but the second half saw a spirited fight back. Only one further unconverted try being considered not withstanding six significant injuries to key personnel.

The Panthers played with heart and determination throughout and real positivity much to the delight of the coaches.

Congratulations to the Players of the match chosen by our opposition-Vicki Moxom our captain for the day who stepped in at 10 and played like she’d done it forever and Alex Goldsborough, our hooker, who had a stormer!

Percy Park Panthers start well with two wins on the road

Score card

A little bit of history as Rockliff RFC hosted Percy Park RFC for the first time in a ladies game.

This is Rockliff’s first senior season in women’s rugby and they welcomed Percy Park Panthers and Ponteland Tigers to a three way 10’s tournament at Lovaine Ave.

Rockliff kicked off and quickly put the Panthers under pressure.

Despite some fantastic cover tackling Rockliff scored, forcing their way over in the right hand corner to the delight of their supporters.

Such was Rockliff’s pressure at that stage that no one would have guessed that that would be the last time the Panthers conceded for the rest of the day.

Park slowly clawed their way back into the game and a brace of tries from Vicki Moxom either side of half-time settled the Park nerves.

The second half saw the Panthers take control with some strong tackling in midfield and great hands resulting in tries for Bethany Milne, Leonie Denley , and Sheona McIntyre converted by Dom Hepples to leave the final score Whitley Bay Rockliff 5 Percy Park Panthers 27. Player of the game Vicki Moxom.

After a short break the Panthers kicked off against Ponteland Tigers who ran the ball back at them hard to signal their attacking intent and the first 6 mins saw the Panthers fighting hard to contain the fresh Tigers attack.

As the half progressed the Panthers slowly began to take control and eventually scores followed with Vicki Moxom crossing to score her third try of the day and Dom Hepple converting her own try with a darting 40m run on the right hand side of the pitch.

Tries then started to arrive regularly as Mel Castanares, Rachel White and Caitlin Monteath-Stokoe crossed the line after some excellent hands to create space wide out and a further conversion from Dom Hepples sealed the win in what was a hard fought game against the Tigers Championship 3 side.

Final score Percy Park Panthers 29 Ponteland Tigers 0.

Player of the game Dom Hepples.
