Morpeth Edwardians 3 - Percy Park Lions 18

Park travelled to Mitford Road in good spirits after a good performance in defeat against a strong Tyndale Grasshopper side the previous week . As is the norm , the Lions had several changes from that side but still looked a strong outfit on paper. Pollock and Fiddler returned from 1st XV bench duty, Walton returned to the centre with Cinema Phil starting on the wing. Bartle covered the bench with Austin and Biggins preferring to get match time with the Pumas and Shaye finding himself being flown back to New Zealand !
The game started at a high tempo , with the home side playing a physical 10 man approach and Park on the other hand opting to play a wider faster game . It was Park that settled the better of the two and were soon stretching their older opponents . An early penalty attempt was missed , but Park soon took the lead with a try and conversion by Spowett . The confident youngster then knocked over a penalty as Park looked to take control . Centre Murphy , who again made several strong runs, added a second try to make the half-time score 15-0 .

Blaydon III 20 – 25 Percy Park Lions

Park’s youngsters won the first league game of the season away to Blaydon, with several regulars missing either through work commitments, injury or being drafted into the 1st XV squad at late notice. Early tries from veteran Gary Davy and kiwi Shay Moore kept the visitors in touch as Blaydon scored 2 tries of their own, and kicked a conversion and penalty in the first half.

With the wind advantage in the second half, Park scored tries through skipper Andy Clyde who crashed over from a tap penalty, then Alan Blakey was on hand to receive a pass from Olly Gilmore to score in the left hand corner. Paul Spowart was unlucky to hit the crossbar with his conversion attempt but kicked a penalty to stretch the lead to 15 – 25.

Blaydon hit back with a late try on full time to take the final score to 20 -25. Young Johnny Dubois was named man of the match.

Percy Park Marauders 57 – 14 Blyth III

It is sometimes strange how fate puts the top two teams in a league, against each other to decide who will be champions in the last game of the season. But that is how it panned out with Park Marauders top of Northumberland league 3c with only one defeat all season, and Blyth III lying second having lost only once and drawn once. The game had been rearranged due to bad weather and cup commitments and was a double header, winners take all.
The Marauders got off to the best possible start when scrum half Mark Kerr went over after only one minute of play, after the ball was recycled well, and Rick Morgan kicked the conversion. Minutes later Morgan kicked a penalty to give Park a 10 – 0 lead.
Blyth opted to rumble the ball when in possession, whereas Park’s fleet footed backs ran the ball wide when ever they could. The visitors tried running the ball out of defence on eleven minutes, when a fumble from ex-Park player Kev Rhodes, coughed up the ball to Park centre David Mellstrom who ran in to score Park's  second try of the game, again converted by Morgan.

PERCY PARK 31 – 25 TYNEDALE RAIDERS

George Purdy Pressures Tyndale's Defense
The understated celebrations that greeted the final whistle proved that Park had still not totally overcome the massive disappointment of losing the promotion play off four days earlier. The history books show that Percy Park had not won the Northumberland Senior Cup since 1958, so to both win the cup and finish in the highest league placing in the club’s history, is testimony to the hard work of the players and coaches throughout the season.

The final took place at McCracken Park, and a good sized crowd saw Tynedale kick off at 6.30pm on the dot in bright sunny conditions, on a firm surface. During the first 20 minutes Borthwick and Rutter exchanged penalty goals, and Park led 9 – 6 until Ali Gray surged down the right wing to score in the corner for Tyne just before half time. Borthwick missed the conversion but the Corbridge side went in to the break 11- 9 up.

Park started the second half in the best possible manner with a try with only a minute played. Ash Smith made a surging break and was unlucky to be pulled up for a forward pass. From the resulting scrum, Park’s pack dominance put the Tyne scrum under huge pressure and scrum half John Scott, stole the ball at the back of the scrum and spun the ball wide for Martin Shaw to go in at the corner. Referee Wayne Falla consulted his touch judge before awarding the try, and although the conversion was short of the mark Park now led 14 – 11.
