England Women name their Talent Development Group for the forthcoming season and that includes a very special talent from Percy Park RFC

England Head Coach Jo Yapp said: “Following our tour in the summer, we have seen a number of U20 players selected into the Red Roses squad ahead of the Quilter Internationals.

“This provides an opportunity for new players who have come through the pathway. This season we have seen a number of good performances at club level in the Tyrrells Premier 15s, which is proving a great platform for player development.
“We are now looking forward to building towards the three games later in the season.”

As a result of a number of players progressing into the U20 from the Talent Development Group (TDG), seven additional players have been recruited to the TDG. AND that includes our own Orla McCallion from Percy Park RFC.

Orla has already represented England at Touch Rugby and is well on her way to being in that special category of representing her home country at both Touch and within the 15 a side game…..Orla is indeed a very special talent and that is something to be celebrated…you never know we might see a framed England shirt taking pride of place in our 1872 Sports bar…..now that really would be great to see, especially as Orlas’s dad is of the green variety!!

Percy Park Women v Cancer Bike Ride

Rugby is a team sport that has always delivered great social and community occasions and on 'the coast' there is none more eagerly anticipated than the Boxing Day 'dispute' between Percy Park and Rockcliff. The fixture has always been about two rugby communities gathering in friendship to bandy and exchange stories about years and games gone by. And within that spirit the home club will always give a generous donation to a chosen charity. This year Percy Park chose to support 'Women v Cancer', a charity championed by four ladies from Percy Park who are taking part in the 'Women v Cancer' cycle ride from London to Paris. The cycle ride is a special fundraising partnership between Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo's Cervical Cancer trust. Their challenge is to cycle around 240 miles in three days through the South Downs and Northern France ending with a spectacular finish at the Eiffel Tower.
Both Percy Park and Rockcliff Rugby Clubs wish Nicky, Hannah, Karen and Carrie all the best in their endeavours to meet the challenge
And there is still time to donate by contacting Nicky Jenkins on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

James Ponton in Park coloursPercy Park wish to extend the warmest of congratulations to our own James Ponton who has been elevated to the England RFU U20 coaching staff.

James started his playing career with Percy Park before making the move to Tynedale. His professional career started at West Hartlepool followed by Leeds Tykes. His coaching career began at Sedgley Park where he was player coach for a while before moving back to Newcastle and coached Percy Park to gain promotion to National 3. James joined the Falcons as Academy Coach in January 2012.

The artice below is the communication circulated by the Rugby Union. When you read the article you will see that ‘Ponts’ is joining a very successful coaching programme and that he has a ‘tough yet exciting task’ ahead. He has our support and I am sure that on his next visit to Preston Avenue he will buy all a drink to celebrate; however be warned the beverage will most likely be provided in the First Team changing rooms accompanied by a bucket !!

As promised the RFU ‘edict’….

PRESS RELEASE: 26th JUNE 2020

£9428 to help PERCY PARK RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB during current COVID-19 pandemic

Percy Park RFC in North Shields has been awarded £9428 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Emergency Fund towards club maintenance during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

The outbreak of the virus and the consequent shutdown of businesses as of March 23 has left the sport and physical activity sector facing a period of uncertainty.

In response, on March 31 Sport England announced a £195m package to help the sport and physical activity sector through covid-19. Within the package is a £20m Community Emergency Fund, of National Lottery money to deliver immediate funding to those who have a role in supporting the nation to be active but are experiencing short-term financial hardship or the ceasing of operations due to the impact of coronavirus.

The grant will allow Percy Park RFC to maintain  pitches, carry out essential club maintenance and pay  running costs which still fall due despite the club being closed to business.

Chris McDine, Percy Park President and Chairman sent this message.

On behalf of Percy Park Rugby Football Club I'd like to thank Sports England very much for our Sports Community Grant. This grant has come at a time where our club has received very little income for over 3 months, so it's much needed and we are very appreciative. This money will be spent on continuing to maintain and improve our clubhouse for all in the community to continue to enjoy.

Chris McDine

Chairman

Percy Park RFC

Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s Chief Executive, said:

“As the body responsible for the growth of sport and physical activity participation, we want the vital grassroots organisations that make sport and physical activity happen in this country to not just to come through this crisis but to be in a position to thrive again in the future. The £20m Community Emergency fund, made possible by National Lottery players is part of a multimillion pound package of support we are providing to ease the pressure on a huge number of the organisations who are central to the nation’s health and wellbeing.

“We are proud to be able to provide vital funding to Percy Park Rugby Football Club to help it through these extremely challenging times.”
