Percy Park RFC Mini Presentation Awards

sponsored by Wade Financial. Chartered Financial Planners

On Sunday 12th May 2019 the hallowed turf of Preston Avenue was awash with children proudly adorned with their black and whites strips, chasing numerous rugby balls, in a scene that brought a smile to many a casual observer. The clubhouse was ‘bulging at the seams’ as the Percy Park Mini Section gathered for their end of season presentation awards, kindly provided by Percy Park Club sponsors Wade Financial. A seat and space to stand was hard to find.

David Dodds and Hannah Witty of Wade Financial were at hand to present the awards along with Northumberland Captain, First XV and former Club Captain Michael Langlands and First XV player Eddie Saint.

The photographs of the event are a joy to see and the album can be viewed on the Percy Park Facebook site. Many thanks to Percy Park club photographer Paul Jackson for his artistry. He certainly captured the afternoon.

Percy Park RFC 50 v Bradford and Bingley RUFC 35

'Park up to 5th in try fest'.

Percy Park produced a sparkling display of first half rugby that had many of the faithful clapping their hands in anticipation of more to come only for the old mental frailties to reappear in the opening 8 minutes of the second half that saw Bradford score 3 unanswered tries. An achievement that had the faithful wringing those same hands in a nervous, nearing hysteria led melt down. Many had seen it before…remember the last time we played Bradford at home and that second half capitulation…and were holding their heads in their hands. Not again was the cry…..as the team regrouped behind their posts, players returned to the game with undaunted determination and the faithful took a deep breath. The next score belonged to Park and in the doing the measure of how far this team has developed and progressed was evident for all to see….so how did this game pan out and how in earth did Josh Hedley manage that sidestep?

Percy Park RFC 43 v Bridlington RUFC 0

'Park bounce back with scintillating win over Brid'

Following last week’s second half debacle away to Morley, Percy Park really needed to pull something out of the hat to settle the frayed nerves of the Percy Park faithful. And to their credit they came out of the traps like a wounded lion and truly bit a hopeful Bridlington in the haunches. It was a performance that had Coach Patton smiling and enthusing about his team “It was a great team performance built on strong defence. We were really focused on getting off the ‘D’ to win the gain line and that was very pleasing. Ash (Smith) and I want to our players to embody the principal of giving maximum effort when they play. If they do that they will be able to compete and when we compete that enables the team to celebrate. The hard job now is to replicate those principals on the road. We acknowledge that our home form is good however on the road it isn’t. To have the ability to compete at the top of the table we need to be a lot better than we have been”

From the start Percy Park showed intent by keeping Bridlington pinned in their half with some astute grubber and chip kicks followed by a quick chase. All Bridlington could do was attempt to recycle the bar and hammer the same down the lines. Yet the pressure was relentless with Park running the ball back with a vengeance. Only a marginal decision from the referee prevented Will Haskins from scoring when an earlier pass was adjudged to have been forward. And it didn’t take long for the Bridlington dam to burst. With Bridlington diving in from the side Park kicked the penalty to the corner. The catch and drive drove deep to the 5 metre line where Park knocked on. With an almighty heave Percy Park took Bridlington’s ball, allowing Ethan Wilson (playing at 8) to gather and dash over for the score. With Michael Grove converting. 7-0 to the home side.

Morley RFC 52 v Percy Park RFC 29

A point gained….yet many are ‘lost for words’!

Following our empathetic victory over Consett, Percy Park departed Preston Avenue with real intent and expectation of delivering a good performance. A mood that left all contemplating the warm autumn words of a William Wordsworth or Yeats. Words that wrapped you up and left you feeling that all will be well in your world, despite the imminent chilly winter months. And as we all looked out of the bus window and contemplated the days wane, the thought of nights closing in and viewing nature’s vibrant hues none of us perceived the bite of a wintry bluster. Yet by the end of this game we all had experienced a gruesome icy blast and the only descriptive words being uttered were of a rough cathartic nature and decidedly winter blue in nature! At half time it was so different; we were in control, we were the better side and importantly 24-12 to the good. As coach Patton contemplated post-match “ we showed our class and game in patches but not enough responsibility to keep working hard for the full 80”…which was a very nice way of describing a second half submission that allowed Morley to outscore Park by 40 points to 5 !! So what went wrong?

Park bounce back with an 8 try haul

Percy Park RFC 48 v Consett RUFC 21

'Park bounce back with an 8 try haul'

A ‘ruthless’ performance from Parks back line devastated a very competitive Consett side. Following their collapse away to Driffield last Saturday, Percy Park were determined to show their detractors that they can be a force in North One East rugby. A determination that had many a supporter ‘purring’ at the pace and power exhibited by their team and had Coach Ash Smith happily describing part of the performance as ‘deadly’. Yet he did take a moment to bring an amount of realism into his summary, acknowledging that Park need to be more consistent in their performances before anyone can readily describe Percy Park as a quality side….”Good to bounce back after that away game against Driffield. What we need to do now is transfer our home performances to games on the road and I will be looking toward next week’s game against Morley to see how well we are actually doing. Having said that, we played some good rugby today working really hard off the ball and allowing our backs freedom to attack. The backs were deadly and executed their chances well. Overall we are very pleased with the result”

Consett started the game well helped by Park giving away territory from unnecessary penalties. Wing Ross Young feeling the ire of all around him as he failed to listen to clear instructions from the referee. Park were immediately on the back foot, with Consett being given the ‘advantage’, they pounded Parks defensive line. The referees whistle was shrill and many felt Park were creeping into card terriority. Only a timely leap at the line out from Michael Langlands relieved the pressure, allowing all in the ground to breathe. And from there Park went on the attack and they were devastating. With wing Ali Blair and full back Matty Boustead running great lines coupled with an audacious chip, catch and offload from Ash Smith, Park were on Consetts line. With the forwards pummelling their opposite numbers, Captain Jonny Dubois was unfortunate to be adjudged to be ‘held up over the line’. Still Park persisted. With the ball in the hands of centre Phil Morse, a little bit of magic saw a defence splitting chip bounce into the hands of Ali Blair, who in a flash was over to score under the posts. With the conversion taken…7 nil.
